Valparaiso coach Bill Marshall used the phrase “physical being” to describe Ty Veen. The 6-foot, 225-pound senior linebacker brings it all to bear on the field. “If we had his type of physicality across the board, it would be a hard-pressed football team to beat in any type of game,” Marshall said. “He just has that passion about him.” Marshall also invoked the name of the late Dick Butkus while discussing Veen.
Veen’s bid for more playing time was imperiled when he suffered cartilage damage in one knee during tryouts for Valparaiso’s baseball team in his sophomore year. He said he had surgery and returned for some summer football workouts before “hitting it hard” for preseason practice. “More grateful just to be able to play,” Veen said, he wore a brace throughout his junior season but was able to contribute to the Vikings’ championship march. “Winning a state title was pretty big,” he said.
