“I probably received about 100 bikes and so far have given away about 65 to 70 bikes,” Valley Forge High School Home Liaison Sylvie Argirakis said. “Pretty much, any Ukrainian student who wanted a bicycle received one.'

“We were prepared with school supplies and backpacks for our Ukrainian refugee students, but I was expecting eight and we ended up having about three times as many students show up,” Argirakis said.“We got them signed up for free and reduced lunch, which they will automatically get because of their refugee status. We ordered winter jackets and have hats, coats, gloves.”Parma City Schools currently employs state minimum bus transportation, which doesn’t include high school students.

“Last year, we had a very generous donation from a Valley Forge High School alumni member, so we started our bicycles and bus passes program,” Argirakis said.Early on this school year, Argirakis said she ran out of bicycles and bus passes. That’s when she turned to social media asking for donations. “We have a larger homeless population here at Valley Forge High School as well, so after offering a bicycle to , I opened up the program to the student body.”

“It wasn’t just Parma,” Argirakis said. “I had people come from as far away as Akron to drop off bicycles at our door. I had people from pretty much every community call.
