– The Uvalde City Council unanimously approved an updated memorandum of understanding between the Uvalde Police Department and the Uvalde School District on Tuesday night.Find more Uvalde coverage from KSAT hereOn Tuesday night, Uvalde’s City Council unanimously agreed that the Uvalde Police Department and the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District officers can now share interchangeable leading authority in any necessary event.

The understanding takes place if an emergency situation is happening at a school and city police officers are on campus and have the ability to safely take action. They now can do so as long as they communicate their actions to school district police officers, according to the memorandum. Before the approval, one of the Uvalde City Council members asked why the Texas Department of Public Safety was not part of the memorandum, given that they are a police authority as well, with jurisdiction in the area.

The council, however, moved forward with the understanding that DPS will have to make its own memorandum with Uvalde CISD police.
