UTSA’s Frank Harris sparking offense with explosive passing output
UTSA quarterback Frank Harris has contributed with his legs this season, as well, rushing for 93 yards and a touchdown over the Roadrunners’ first two games.When UTSA quarterback Frank Harris received the second-and-18 snap early in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game at Army, his first instinct was to look right for a pass to Zakhari Franklin.
“Whatever it takes for the team to keep the chains moving,” Harris said. “I’m willing to sacrifice my body, or whatever it is, for this team.” Against Army, Harris completed 32 of 45 passes for a career-high 359 yards — just eight shy of the school record — and three touchdowns. UTSA’s rush attempts, meanwhile, have trended the opposite way, from 41.3 per game in 2020, to 39.8 last season, to 32 per game through two weeks of 2022.
But with UTSA’s top-four offensive tackles unavailable, the Roadrunners have turned to first-year JUCO transfer and converted guard Venly Tatafu at left tackle and walk-on Frankie Martinez at right tackle. The blocking struggles have pushed UTSA toward a quick-hitting passing offense, leveraging the team’s strength at receiver with Franklin, Joshua Cephus and De’Corian Clark.
