The Roadrunners revenues and expenses set record highs by approaching nearly $40 million for fiscal year 2022.
When UTSA announced the move to the American Athletic Conference in October 2021, university president Taylor Eighmy set a goal of building the athletics department’s budget to $40 million by 2025.But by the end of fiscal 2022, the program that had spent between $29.5 million and $32.3 million the previous five years was already closing in on that goal, setting a new department record with $39.2 million in total expenses.
The 2022 cycle marked the first time since 2018 that expenses for UTSA athletics outpaced revenue, which was $38.2 million. “I think our budget is really healthy, and will continue to be,” Campos said. “There’s strategy to it, and we’ll continue to make sure we’re growing.” “We’ll continue to have that conversation, particularly as the university grows,” Campos said. “Obviously, we want a very successful athletics program, and that will be a part of it — the support from the campus.”
Campos said the impact of the football team’s back-to-back Conference USA championships has been evident since the end of the reporting period, and she projects increases in those figures for future years with more time separated from the height of the pandemic.
