She’s developing into the star that got all that hype as a high school freshman, with an assist from the family who’s always had her back.
PUBLISHED 3:19 PM CST Feb. 10, 2023AUSTIN, Texas — Before she played a minute of high school basketball, DeYona Gaston was hyped as the next big thing as a 14-year-old freshman at Pearland High School. Now in her third year at the University of Texas, Gaston is showing what the hype was all about.
“It was a lot of pressure, but I got through it, and I knew how to stay humble about it,” Gaston said. “At that age, I just wanted to play basketball. I wasn’t worried about the ranking.” “It took a toll on me, but my parents were there to help me get through those little mental lapses where I felt like I couldn’t do it anymore,” Gaston said. “It came up,” said DeYona’s dad, Warren, about DeYona possibly quitting basketball. “We were like, ‘Hey, we’re gonna go through this with you. We’re gonna make sure everything’s okay, and we’re gonna do it as a family.’”
