UT hoping Sophia Simpson carry continue pitching prowess
In high school at Barbers Hill, the Longhorns’ Sophia Simpson blossomed into one of the best pitchers in the nation.AUSTIN — Coach Mike White can laugh about it now, granted the benefit of hindsight.
Despite a few dicey moments, she didn’t let the flames spread and incinerate the Longhorns’ chance to upset No. 4 national seed Arkansas at Bogle Park. Simpson ended up going the distance in her first career NCAA Tournament start, striking out seven with five hits and four walks in a 3-0 win over a powerhouse that had been in the national title conversation all season long.
But UT doesn’t make its first WCWS appearance since 2013 without Simpson dashing to the rescue, without her gold-fishing those wild pitches and moving on, without her stepping up and giving bone-tired senior staff ace Hailey Dolcini a needed reprieve. Texas isn’t in OKC, preparing to face fifth-seeded UCLA at 11 a.m. Thursday, without the freshman’s fire.
Hill has been watching Simpson terrorize batters for years now, ever since she pitched her way onto the varsity roster as an eager freshman. It helped that both parents, Susan and Cory, played college and minor league ball — Simpson cites her mom, who pitched at Southeastern Louisiana, and Texas legend Cat Osterman as two of her favorite athletes.The 5-foot-10 righthander registered a 21-0 record, a microscopic 0.18 ERA and 271 strikeouts over 119 innings.
