Texas coaches, teammates taking a liking to QB Quinn Ewers
New Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers spent last fall at Ohio State, getting in for just two snaps before transferring.A grin spread wide across Texas receiver Jordan Whittington’s face at the question. He tittered through an answer, interrupting himself on the hunt for the right words to capture his already-famous new teammate.
Ewers’ hometown of Southlake doesn’t really exude low-key coastal community vibes, and no one’s getting barreled out on Grapevine Lake. “He cool. Like the word I can say is cool, he just a cool dude,” Whittington continued. “And when we get on the field he’s like this leader, strong guy. But off the field he’s just cool, relaxed. I don’t even know what word I’m looking for. But he reminds me of my dad, just a cool guy.”
“Quinn, he’s a pretty cool customer, you know,” coach Steve Sarkisian said. “I don’t think he’s a very anxious guy. And he’s not a too-cool-for-school kind of guy. I just think he loves football. I think he loves being on a team and being on this team and being around guys that he’s comfortable with. Like that’s one thing that he's really shared with me being back is he feels very comfortable with the guys on our team having played against them, played with a couple of them.
That’s all part of the job, too, forging bonds, building trust and earning respect. And as he competes for the starting job despite taking all of two garbage-time snaps at Ohio State last season, Ewers appears cognizant of how to present himself and how to go about building new relationships.
