A long time ago, in a congressional district far, far away, the son of a prominent politician was elected to congress. Correction: It was actually last November in the 7th district. My bad. Regardless, Tom Kean Jr. represents New Jersey’s 7th congressional district, a swing district that leans Republican but voted for both Biden and Cory Booker. This is not MAGA country and that put Kean in a bind.
The debt ceiling has changed from a procedural motion to a political football over the past decade. Raising the debt ceiling sounds bad to the uninitiated. It sounds like giving congress to spend with wild abandon, but it’s not. The spending has already been authorized by congress raising the debt ceiling is simply paying the bill. Not paying our bills, or default, would be very, very bad for the economy.
Given our position as the undisputed global economic superpower, something bad for our economy would be double bad for the world economy. Kevin McCarthy is busily trying to herd his cats and leverage the threat of global economic calamity to wrassle draconian cuts to Biden’s environmental and economic programs. Given his super slim majority in the house he needs every vote he can find, including that of one Tom Kean Jr.
How would the voters of the 7th congressional district look at Kean supporting a hard-core MAGA bill full of cuts to infrastructure, child care and higher ed? Probably not kindly. Kean ran, if you can call it that, as a Trump-curious moderate. His main strategy was to avoid any and all media, or constituents for that matter, who might dare to ask him a question.
