U.S. officials have concluded that the bullet that killed veteran Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh was likely fired from an Israeli position.

But they say it is too badly damaged to reach an absolute determination, and that there is “no reason to believe” she was deliberately targeted.

The U.S. “found no reason to believe that this was intentional but rather the result of tragic circumstances during an IDF-led military operation against factions of Palestinian Islamic Jihad,” Price said. The PA handed the bullet over to U.S. officials over the weekend while insisting it was still opposed to any cooperation with Israel.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz issued a similar statement, saying “unfortunately, it is not possible to determine the source of the shooting — and as such, the investigation will continue.” His statement did not include any details about who analyzed the bullet.
