International Olympic Committee leaders can ignore athletes, but US leaders have the power to force the IOC into dealing with Russian doping, writes nrarmour.
But hey, IOC president Thomas Bach offeredwho finished second to Valieva and the Russians in the team event, so all is OK!
It violated every Olympic ideal, and Bach and his IOC cronies should have been furious. Clean athletes sure were, begging for a punishment harsh enough that it would deter the bad actors in Russia as well as those in other countries who might get similar ideas. And when Russia was found in 2019 to be up to its same old shenanigans, the IOC really got tough. It “banned” Russia from both Tokyo and Beijing – not that you’d know it when the Russian Olympic Committee trails only Norway for medals won and its athletes wear uniforms with the Russian flag on the sleeve.
The IOC can ignore the demands for change from athletes because they are not organized and have near-constant turnover. But Hirshland will not be so easy to dismiss. She is the head of one of the largest and most powerful countries in the Olympic movement, host of the 2028 Games in Los Angeles and maybe another Winter Games in Salt Lake City, possibly as early as 2030.
