The war in Ukraine has prompted the U.S. and other allied countries to scramble to increase the production of 155 mm artillery shells that have been in high demand.

U.S. Marines with Echo Battery, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, operate a M777 towed 155 mm howitzer during Weapons and Tactics Instructors Course 1-18 at Yuma, Ariz., on Sept. 30, 2017.

The Scranton plant, which has produced ammunition for the U.S. military since the Korean War, faces limitations as officials look to expand capacity. The facility is in the midst of a $120 million modernization that the Army hopes will open a new production line by 2025, but the buildings’ listing on the National Register of Historic Places constrains how the structures can be altered.

According to a Pentagon fact sheet released in early April, the U.S. has provided over 160 155 mm howitzers and more than 1.5 million 155 mm artillery rounds to Ukraine since the war began. It has also provided over 14,000 155 mm Remote Anti-Armor Mine Systems that contain four anti-tank mines that the round scatters on the ground near the target.

Already the U.S. has shipped more than 1.5 million rounds to Ukraine, but is seeking more. One reason it is so commonly used is the size and weight of the munition, which have been refined to give it the best range and striking power. According to defense experts, it's long been a favorite of ground troops because of its reach and arc. Ryan Brobst, a research analyst at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, says: “Adversaries don’t have much warning of it coming.'

Unprepared for long war, US Army under gun to make more ammoUnprepared for long war, US Army under gun to make more ammoOne of the most important munitions of the Ukraine war comes from a historic factory in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Steel rods are brought in by train to the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant to be forged into the artillery shells Kyiv can’t get enough of. The plant is at the vanguard of a multibillion-dollar Pentagon plan to modernize and accelerate its production of ammunition and equipment. It is one of just two sites in the U.S. that make the steel bodies for the 155 mm howitzer rounds that the U.S. is rushing to Ukraine. The lack of 155 mm shells has alarmed U.S. military planners, who see it as a critical shortage.
