US announces large-scale NATO naval drills in the Mediterranean dubbed 'Neptune Strike 22' that aim to demonstrate its 'high-end maritime strike capabilities' amid Russian power show
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered a US Navy aircraft carrier strike group to stay in the Mediterranean Sea region rather than move on to the Middle East, amid worries about the buildup of thousands of Russian troops near the Ukraine border.
Kirby said preparations for the exercise had begun in 2020 and that it had nothing to do with fears that Russia could invade Ukraine, on whose borders Moscow has massed tens of thousands of troops. "It really is a NATO maritime exercise to test... a wide range of maritime capabilities that we want to make sure we continue to improve."Drills amid Russian tensions
