There’s also a belief that his ability to succeed in the transfer portal, combined with Auburn’s On To Victory’s Name, Image, and Likeness collective goal of having at least $7 million specifically for football, could lead the Tigers’ back to relevance quicker than expected. Auburn is losing a lot of pieces on the offensive line, and whoever is the head coach will have to address that concern.
Cohen similarly works with a search firm for background checks and other logistical purposes for the imperative coaching selection. Auburn traditionally uses a search committee formed of board of trustee members, former players, and other stakeholders. However, Cohen is taking a different path by not using a committee. No committee means fewer people are involved with the decision leading to fewer leaks of information to the media.
If Kiffin doesn’t work out, it’s no secret that Hugh Freeze from Liberty is interested and would be a target. Some would prefer Freeze because they believe he’d be more likely to engage with program traditions than Kiffin. Freeze knows the West division and is itching to redeem himself in the Southeastern Conference.
“The prominent names remain there. You’re looking at Matt Rhule, Lane Kiffin, Hugh Freeze, Bill O’Brien, Mark Stoops– somewhere in that range,” Thamel said on the Finebaum show. “John Cohen has definitely made it clear. He wants to go big and Auburn to reemerge in the national conversation, which it’s faded from in recent years.”
