All the details behind Alexa Chung’s bride-worthy MetGala look done by Dublin designer Róisín Pierce
Karl Lagerfeld’s masterful experimentations with material are what drew Dublin-based Róisín Pierce to fashion design. “I was amazed by what he could achieve in terms of fabrication for his haute couture collections for Chanel,” she says.
Pierce herself does not sketch her womenswear designs. Process led, they’re the result of extensive experimentations with embroidery, crochet and cotton lace. Her innovative approach caught the eye ofRunway, which I peruse now and then to see what’s going on. I was immediately impressed by her frothy, intelligent designs and began to think of events I might be able to wear one to,” Chung explains.
Divulging on how the intricate layers of Chung’s ethereal look was designed, Pierce explains: “The top is made up of multiples of satin crepe squares, patchworked together with overlaid delicate daisy-stitched organza. The squares are manipulated and pulled to create a highly textured centered flower throughout the piece. We appliquéd these larger organic smocked flowers that were joined together with bows that float on top, forming a collage of pretty details.
“I really think that the pieces are more beautiful in white,” Pierce smiles, explaining that the intricate flower and star details on Chung’s look only become visible on further inspection. “When you look closer you see all these fine details.” Her color palette also references traditional Irish white-on-white embroidery, noted particularly on antique linens. Evoking Karl's own love of two-tone, Chung paired the look with black Jimmy Choo court shoes .
Lagerfeld himself had a disdain for his own past, choosing always to focus on the possibility of the future. It’s an approach Pierce herself has an affinity with. “My work is really about a commitment to new design,” she says. “He was future-focused at all times and particularly interested in emerging designers, musicians, writers and creatives in general,” Chung adds. “I saw this year’s theme as an opportunity to bring attention to a young designer who has been influenced by Mr Lagerfeld.
