Akron’s police department chase policy doesn't limit officers to pursue people for certain criminal offenses. Cleveland’s new policy only allows officers to chase people accused of committing felonies of violence or to stop imminent danger to the public.
Akron Police Chief Stephen Mylett addresses the media before releasing the the body cam video of the killing of Jayland Walker June 27 after a car chase in Akron.AKRON, Ohio -- The police killing of Jayland Walker in Akron last week has drawn comparisons to the seminal 2012 police chase in Cleveland where 13 officers fired 137 gunshots and killed an unarmed couple.
In contrast, more than 60 Cleveland police cars abandoned their patrol zones and joined the 2012 chase of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams after officers mistakenly reported what prosecutors later said was likely their car backfiring, not a gunshot. Many officers did so either without receiving a supervisor’s permission or in direct defiance of orders not to join the chase.

Cleveland’s new policy only allows officers to chase people accused of committing felonies of violence or to stop imminent danger to the public. Thirty-two seconds later, the officer said over the radio that the car was not stopping. A supervising officer told the officers to turn on his lights and sirens if he was going to chase the car. The officer confirmed it was a chase and said he was going 43 mph.About 40 seconds after the officer initially tried to stop Walker, the officer reported that a gunshot was fired out of the door of Walker’s car.
