Footage showcasing a new underwater drone called 'Marichka' ('Mary') has been released by a Ukrainian charity with the aim of attracting investment.
Since August, The foundation has advocated for developing the uncrewed underwater vehicle and seeking investments and donations. In the shared video, the UUV is lowered into the water after being detached from a six-wheeled trailer for land transportation. It also shows several anonymous people preparing the drone, after which it moves out under its own propulsion system.
While apparently still very much in a developmental phase, it is unclear how far along the project is and when it could be ready. This is mainly because such posts are being used to source additional funding. However, as, Ukraine has previously demonstrated a prioritization of these capabilities and has successfully deployed them rapidly.
No other details have been shared about "Marichka," but it is said to be slightly less than 20 feet in length and just over 3 feet in diameter. It is also unclear what the UUV's propulsion system is. However, from the footage released, it appears to be electrical and not air-breathing. While the footage is a little grainy, the UUV appears to have a cylindrical body and is equipped with four fins positioned around its rear end.
AMMO Ukraine has previously stated that "Marichka" has a maximum range of 621 miles . If this is accurate, the drone submarine could make one-way trips to almost any location in the Black Sea from ports in western Ukraine. Using appropriate motherships at sea, launching the UUV closer to its destination may also be possible.
It could also be used that "Marichka" could serve as a covert transport for delivering vital resources to military units or civilians in coastal regions. It could also potentially aid Ukrainian special operations teams in carrying out missions in Crimea.
