The United Kingdom will pay citizens more than $400 a month to host Ukrainian refugees as the war in Ukraine continues.
Housing Minister Michael Gove said in a statement Sunday that under a program called Homes for Ukraine, people who are willing and have the ability to open their homes to refugees could receive payment, according to Reuters. Gove said those who can offer a spare room or even an available piece of property for at least six months would be eligible to receive up to 350 pounds, the equivalent of $456.
Under the program, citizens, businesses, and charities will be able to register on a website in order to offer housing to refugees, the British government said, according to the outlet. Those wanting to partake in the program will be required to go through a background check and ensure that their housing meets the proper standards, according to the outlet.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has received criticism over the government requiring Ukrainian refugees to continue seeking visas, even as other European Union countries such as France have dropped the requirement.
