As authorities around the world scramble to draw up guardrails for artificial intelligence, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warns against moving too fast on regulating the rapidly developing technology before it’s fully understood.

Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak delivers a speech on AI at Royal Society, Carlton House Terrace, London, Thursday Oct. 26, 2023. The UK will host the first AI Safety Summit on Nov. 1 and 2 where world leaders and tech firms will convene to discuss the growing impact of AI.

AI developers, who"don't always fully understand what their models could become capable of," should not be “marking their own homework,” Sunak said. Authorities are racing to rein in artificial intelligence amid the recent rise of general purpose AI systems such as ChatGPT that have generated excitement and fear.
