The EU-wide ads include information about how the U.K.'s upcoming departure from the EU would affect them.
Britain’s state-backed social media ad-buying campaign in other countries is not illegal. But its focus on Brexit — even though the government's campaign was mostly about information-sharing — could be viewed as political messaging. It also highlights the current limitations of Facebook’s efforts to improve the transparency of political ads. Politicians across Europe, the United States and other countries have called on the company to limit the ability of foreign governments to target voters in other countries with such social media ads.
