In advance of Big 12 membership, Cougars raise a toast to their journey and what's ahead

“We’ve got a great road ahead of us,” athletic director Chris Pezman told the crowd to loud applause.“I see it on the horizon that this place can be special,” Holgorsen said.“I don’t get into being inferior to any other team,” Sampson said. “I don’t understand that mindset. We’re the University of Houston. We have arguably the greatest city in America. Why would we feel inferior to a team from Austin … College Station … Lubbock … Waco? I wasn’t born and raised here.

At T-minus nine days until UH — along with BYU, UCF and Cincinnati — officially joins the Big 12 on July 1, hope and excitement are pouring out just like Tuesday night’s variety of wines. No one in the room needed a reminder of UH’s nearly 30-year pursuit to join a major conference after it was shunned during the Southwest Conference/Big Eight merger in the mid-1990s.

UH has crossed a targeted threshold, Pezman said, with 25,000 season football tickets sold as of Tuesday. He teased a “big announcement” that could come next week, perhaps a potential eight-figure gift for the naming rights to the football operations center that will begin being constructed later this year. Launched a year ago, the Houston RISE campaign has raised more than one-third of the $150 million starting point that will go toward construction costs and other facility upgrades.

And let me tell you, this year's class is something special.
