UH, Kansas to play basketball games in Mexico in 2024 as Big 12 expands geographic footprint
UH fans will have the opportunity to travel to a rare international game when the Cougars’ men’s and women’s basketball teams play Kansas in Mexico City in December 2024.announced Thursday that men’s and women’s basketball games between the University of Houston and Kansas will be played in Mexico City in 2024.
Two of the nation’s premier men’s programs, UH and Kansas will play at 22,300-seat Arena CDMX in December 2024. No additional details were provided, but a person with knowledge of the situation said the game is expected to part of both schools’ non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 season. As part of Big 12 Mexico, the league also plans to explore a football bowl game in Monterrey beginning in 2026. It would mark the first bowl game played in Mexico.
“Mexico is a natural extension to the Big 12 footprint, and I’m thrilled to introduce Big 12 Mexico as the Conference’s first-ever international presence,” commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement. “Through Big 12 Mexico, our student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete in an international setting, and our Conference will have the chance to showcase our brand across Mexico.
Five current and future Big 12 schools — UH, Baylor, Texas, TCU and Texas Tech — are located less than 400 miles from the Mexican border. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have campus extensions in Mexico.“As the Big 12 looks towards Mexico, it was logical for the University of Houston to embrace this opportunity,” UH athletic director Chris Pezman said in a statement.
