University of Houston College of Nursing takes new name after $20M gift from Gessner family

Two people walk across University Drive near the Cullen Building on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020, at the University of Houston in Houston.Philanthropists Andy and Barbara Gessner have donated $20 million to the University of Houston College of Nursing, a gift that has renamed the school and energized its efforts to stem a statewide shortage in the field.

The gift came during National Nurses Week and was celebrated by dozens of students and faculty at UH. Graduates will enter a profession in Texas that is currently short of 29,000 registered nurses – a number that is expected to grow to 57,000 by 2032, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

"We're not going to be the end all to be all, but we have to make an investment," Tart said."The community has to make an investment."UH’s nursing school has more than 375 nursing students across its undergraduate and graduate programs and has increased enrollment by 141% since 2018 at its Sugar Land, Katy and main campuses, according to the university.

Known around Houston partly because of their name – Gessner Road was named after Andy Gessner’s uncle – they have donated to UH since 1995. The couple most recently gave $1 million to the C.T. Bauer College of Business to support aspiring sales professionals at the Stephen Stagner Sales Excellence Institute, and their Gessner Family Nursing Scholarship has so far provided full tuition to 19 students in the bachelor of science in nursing program.

Barbara’s mother, Mildred Roberson Pottenger, served as a nurse during World War II and sometimes flew with wounded soldiers from the battlefield to the hospital.UH System Regent Ricky Raven said he believes the $20 million underscores the importance of nursing in daily healthcare. While he was on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Raven saw the nursing shortage up close and watched Amarillo health officials struggle to meeting nursing needs at their various hospitals.
