Uber agreed to a multimillion-dollar settlement with the city of Chicago over what authorities there called deceptive practices at UberEats and Postmates
in several of their top markets over how fees should be charged to customers and restaurants. The pandemic caused a huge shift of both restaurants and diners to online platforms. Other cities, such as New York and San Francisco, imposed caps on fees charged by delivery services.
The meal-delivery platform will pay $500,000 to Chicago restaurants that were listed without their consent and who don’t have contracts with Uber. Another $2.5 million will be provided in commission waivers to restaurants that were listed on the platform without consent, and don’t currently have contracts with Uber.
The company removed all remaining Chicago restaurants that had been listed on Uber’s platforms without their consent and agreed not to list Chicago restaurants in the future without their consent. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement that the settlement would help protect consumers and businesses from unlawful conduct. “There is no room for deceptive and unfair practices,” she said.Copyright ©2022 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
