New York City is ordering Uber and Lyft to suspend service in the city at 8 p.m.—the start of its curfew—until 12:30 a.m. as the city attempts to crack down on violence and looting that have marred protests over the death of 46-year-old George Floyd.... [+]

Protesters demonstrated for the fourth straight night after video emerged of a Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, pinning Floyd's neck to the ground. Floyd was later pronounced dead while in police custody after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. The four officers involved have been fired and Chauvin has been arrested and charged with 3rd degree murder.

The New York Post reported that Lyft, Citi Bike and Revel scooters would be banned for the first half of the curfew, and Uber confirmed that its service would shut down in the five boroughs"at the requests of the city." Uber Eats, however, is continuing as an essential service during the ongoing Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic., CNBC reported that Uber, Lyft and DoorDash would be suspended operations in some cities with curfews, including Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco, though it wasn't clear if New York was one of those cities.Numerous cities have instituted curfews as protests over the killing of 46-year-old George Floyd have continued into a new week.
