The U.S. doesn't need to beat Sweden to advance in the World Cup. But it has reason to want to.
LE HAVRE, France—It’s difficult to hold a grudge against Sweden. One of the 10 happiest nations on earth according to the United Nations, Sweden gave us IKEA and the ice hotel.
But Sweden’s national women’s soccer team visited on the U.S. women’s team the darkest hour in its otherwise sun-kissed history. The Swedes beat the U.S. on penalty kicks in the 2016 Olympic quarterfinals, the American women’s worst-ever finish in a major tournament.
