The U.S. will help Australia build nuclear submarines in a new deal countering China
Australia will partner with the United States and United Kingdom to build a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, the three countries said Wednesday, a major step likely designed to push back against China’s power in the South Pacific.... [+]Australia’s nuclear submarine program was unveiled in a joint address by President Joe Biden and his U.K. and Australian counterparts Wednesday evening, part of the rollout for AUKUS, a new defense partnership between the three longtime allies.
Australia will consult with the United States and United Kingdom on this program over the next 18 months, and the submarine fleet will eventually be built in the South Australia city of Adelaide, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.
