U.S. soldiers may have violated DoD rules by wearing MAGA-inspired patches at Trump Memorial Day address
The U.S. service members that were seen wearing Make America Great Again-inspired patches while attending President Donald Trump’s Memorial Day address during his state visit to Japan could have violated the Department of Defense’s policy banning active-duty soldiers from endorsing a “political candidate, campaign or cause.”
Wall Street Journal reporter Vivian Salama shared two images of the patches to Twitter on Monday, prompting users to raise the question on whether they breached the DoD’s regulations on political affiliations. In a statement to CBS, Navy spokesperson Samuel Boyle said: “Navy leadership is currently reviewing this instance to ensure that the wearing of the patch does not violate DoD policy or regulations.”
The incident on Memorial Day was not the first time active-duty service members have been accused of breaching military rules by displaying Trump-affiliated apparel. In December, Trump was criticized for engaging in campaign activities by signing “Make America Great Again” hats for troops during an unannounced visit to Iraq.
