First-time claims for unemployment benefits rise
The numbers: The number of people who applied for jobless benefits in mid-September rose slightly — largely reflecting a General Motors worker strike in Michigan — but the level of new “claims” nationwide remains near a 50-year low.
The number of people already collecting unemployment benefits, known as continuing claims, declined by 15,000 to 1.65 million.Big picture: Job losses are still extremely low even though there’s scattered signs that some companies are cutting jobs. Layoffs have stuck near a 50-year bottom, suggesting a strong U.S. labor market remains the bedrock of the U.S. economy.
