In a challenge to China, the U.S. and U.K. will help Australia build a nuclear-powered submarine as part of a new security alliance
WASHINGTON—The U.S., the United Kingdom and Australia are creating a new security partnership in the Indo-Pacific, building on the longstanding alliance between the three to share intelligence, deepen cooperation and help Australia build a new nuclear-powered submarine to counter China.
The new agreement was outlined Wednesday by administration officials who described it as a strategic alignment of interests in the Asia Pacific region. They said it would have a number of components, chief among them the development of the nuclear submarine capability. Others include ways tobetween the three countries in cyberspace, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and undersea capabilities, administration officials said Wednesday.
“This new architecture, this new alignment, is about collaborating on joint capabilities and pursuing deeper interoperability,” a senior administration official said of the partnership, known as AUKUS, an acronym for Australia, United Kingdom and the U.S. “This will be a sustained effort over many years to see how we can marry and merge some of our independent and individual capabilities into greater, trilateral engagement.
Officials declined to say the effort was intended to counter China, except to describe it as an effort to engage three allies together strategically in an important region. The announcement comes shortly after the
