GivingTuesday saw a rise in donations and volunteering this year, with $2.7 billion raised in the United States on the event's 10th year.
The GivingTuesday organization, which promotes the event, said volunteering levels also increased by 11 percent compared to last year. It added that 35 million Americans participated Tuesday, whether that be by giving or volunteering. Donations of food and other items also increased by 8 percent. It is an independent nonprofit that facilitates donations to organizations around the world. Social media has greatly helped with the campaign's popularity, with individualusers being able to start their own fundraisers and public figures and organizations tweeting about their charitable efforts with the hashtag #GivingTuesday.
