When Dave Butterfield, senior vice president of New Jersey-based U.S. Cold Storage LLC, first prompted the company to invest in the northeast corner of Interstate 65 and Indiana 2 in 2017 in Lake County, he could see the potential. Seven years, a pandemic and another $90-plus million later, that project is coming to fruition as officials Wednesday broke ground on a planned fully automated $124-million U.S. Cold Storage facility.

From left, Tony Ferraro, a representative from U.S. Sen. Mike Braun’s office; Lake County Commissioner Jerry Tippy; and Larry Alderfer, president and CEO of U.S. Cold Storage, and others break ground Wednesday on the $124 million project at Interstate 65 and Indiana 2.

It also is one of a kind for south Lake County. County officials say with a price tag of $124 million, this is the largest non-medical development in south Lake County. USCS plans to build an approximately 13.5 million-cubic-foot public refrigerated warehouse, trailer drop areas, a dog and related need will be built on 70 of the 110 acres it owns at Indiana 2 and Colorado Street. It purchased a remaining 40 acres to reserve for future use by a company customer.

Adam Ashley, general manager for USCS who will oversee the facility once it opens, said the location is strategically located in a key market for the company and will offer additional capacity in the Chicagoland area.“In partnership with our Lebanon, Indiana location and our Chicago-area warehouses, we can offer customers coordinated, less-than-truckload distribution savings and help them reach 48 states within the U.S.,” Ashley said.
