It took his G League point guard to provide one more assist.
Washington had scored 53 points with 10 rebounds for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday, prompting all the calls and texts as word spread. When he finally let the phone recharge its battery, he did not hear that the Rockets were calling him up from the G League to join them in Los Angeles on Saturday to prepare to play the Clippers on Sunday.“After the game last night, I was chilling in my room for like an hour,” Washington said. “Everybody started calling me.
“My phone was dead. I guess all the coaches were trying to call me. So, as soon as it turned back on, Trevor was the first name I saw so I called him back and he told me.” Washington averaged 20.2 points on 47 percent shooting in his initial 10-game “showcase” stint with the Vipers. In his three regular-season games since returning, he averaged 33.3 points on 46.5 percent shooting along with 7.3 assists.
“It’s helped me a lot,” Washington said of his time with the Vipers. “It helped me grow on and off the court. It taught me to stay ready, stay patient. When your number gets called, go out there and do what you do. In the meantime, don’t look at it like I’ve been demoted or anything like that. Go down there, have fun, play your game, and get your confidence.”
