City Hall approves Stormont proposal for buildings in city centre and Cavehill
Belfast will have two new listed buildings, after City Hall this week gave its support to the protected designation for 19th century constructions in North Belfast and the City Centre.
A council report states: “The property is one of the earliest houses to have been built along the Cavehill Road and - in contrast to many of its neighbours - is largely original both inside and out. Belfast Electric Light Station, at Chapel Lane BT1, is Belfast’s earliest power station and is thought to be the oldest surviving civic structure of its kind within Northern Ireland.
“It also reveals much of the attitudes of the city fathers towards innovation and diversification in the face of their ongoing investment in the local gasworks.” Grade B+ Special buildings are those that might have merited A status but were reduced over detracting features such as impurities of design, or lower quality additions or alterations.
