The cross-party consensus on migration shows how pressing the issue is for all party leaders. But Mr Sunak, who made stopping the small boats one of his, will be under the most pressure from his own MPs in showing he can make real progress on the policy in the next few months.

Out of all voters, 64 per cent of the population think the numbers are too high, including 38 per cent who think they are “much too high” and 26 per cent believing they are “a little too high”. Some 20 per cent think the figures are about right, and just 6 per cent think the numbers are too low. The poll also shows that 44 per cent of voters believe Britain leaving the EU has had a negative impact on levels of migration to the UK, compared to just 13 per cent who think it has made a positive effect, while 35 per cent believe it has made no difference.returns to the House of Lords on Monday, where it is expected to be heavily amended by peers who are attempting to overturn plans to deport migrants to Rwanda.
