Two thirds of Americans still don't love tipping, apparently.

Then, around last spring, business returned to some version of normal and so-called “. Some customers expressed the feeling that they were being asked to tip too much, too often. Others argued that when people don’t tip the recommended amount, they’re simply not paying the full cost of a meal. “Framing tipping as a burden or an extra demand on customers makes fatigue an inevitable reaction,” Adam Reinerfor Bon Appétit.

Now people are clearly confused and frustrated—again—by the question of how much, and when, to tip. As restaurants and cafes replace cash jars with touch screens suggesting higher tipping percentages, leaving a custom amount has become an awkward undertaking—especially while the person you’re tipping watches you try to do the math.

“Inflation and general economic unease seem to be making Americans stingier with their tipping habits, yet we’re confronted with more invitations to tip than ever,” Bankrate senior industry analyst Ted Rossman said for the study. “It’s a fascinating issue with few clear answers. There is one apparent certainty, though: Tipping doesn’t seem likely to leave American society anytime soon.”
