Police say the protest in which the building was covered in red paint involved three people

It's understood Extinction Rebellion activists sprayed red paint over the Castle Place building on Monday, November 14.

Protestors had said the action was to draw attention to the “impunity with which Barclays continues to fund and profit from new fossil fuels”.A PSNI spokesperson said: "A 33-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman have been charged with criminal damage, disorderly behaviour and burglary with intent to cause unlawful damage and are expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on December 9th.

In a notice posted on the door of the building after the protest, Barclays said: "Sorry, but due to circumstances beyond our control we are unable to open this branch at the moment. "We're doing everything we can to get things up and running again. In the meantime please accept our apologies."For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage here.
