The student, a Williamson County native and Georgetown high school student, died in January, according to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office.On March 15, the Texas state Senate passed legislation classifying deaths related to fentanyl overdoses as poisonings. The legislation would allow the state to prosecute those responsible for the production and distribution of fentanyl for murder, and charges related to the distribution of nonlethal fentanyl would be updated as well.
"According to the CDC, in the 12-month period ending in February 2022, more than 75,000 Americans died from overdosing on synthetic opioids, mainly fentanyl," Harris County Sen. Joan Huffman said.Texas has reached a"critical point" in the fentanyl crisis, she said in a March interview.
