In June, the Texas factory released its first batch of shoes — a backless slipper appropriately named the “.” The $205 shoes, made of a vegetable-tanned saddle leather, sold out within a day, said Ashmore. The 12-person El Paso outpost, said Ashmore, is similar in many ways to the Gaziantep workshop: Both are located in multicultural border towns with histories of craftsmanship. But the El Paso workshop is also a space, Ashmore said, to depart from tradition and experiment with materials, techniques and designs.
The El Paso factory of shoemaking company Sabah will release its collaboration with Istanbul-based print brand LAR Studio on July 24. Pictured above is the Sahil Baba by LAR. “With anything that you do by hand with a lot of care and integrity, it’s finding and training folks,” said Ashmore.
