TAIPÉI, Taiwán (AP) — La presidenta de Taiwán, Tsai Ing-wen, renovó el miércoles su promesa de reforzar la autodefensa de la isla durante una visita a un monumento a los últimos enfrentamientos entre China y Taiwán.

Tsai, que visitaba las islas exteriores de Kinmen donde se combatió hace 65 años, rindió homenaje a los caídos en el conflicto. La acompañaban el ministro de Defensa, Chiu Kuo-cheng, y el responsable del Consejo de Seguridad Nacional, Wellington Koo.

Las palabras de Tsai tenían un significado especial porque Kinmen se encuentra en el Estrecho de Taiwán, la estrecha franja de mar que divide Taiwán y China. En sus puntos más cercanos, la ciudad sureña de Xiamen es visible a simple vista desde Kinmen.
