Top White House economist Kevin Hassett told CNBC that "the real news" is that the talks with Mexico have "proceeded very favorably." Officials at U.S. Customs and Border Protection have been working on the paperwork necessary to put the new tariffs into effect. "Among the points discussed, the delegation explained the operation of Mexico's National Guard, saying its priority will be southeastern Mexico, with 6,000 guard members deployed in the region," the Mexican Foreign Ministry said in afollowing the initial two days of talks with Trump administration officials, which ended Thursday.
The Trump administration has been pressing Mexico to commit to such a pact. Asked about the issue on Thursday, Pence told reporters he didn't want to negotiate in public.
