The poll surveyed respondents on questions related to whether Trump will face criminal charges.
. The first is an investigation into whether he violated federal law by storing classified documents at his Florida beach house after leaving office. The second is a federal investigation into his culpability in inciting the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The third is a state investigation related to election tampering in Georgia. The fourth and fifth have to do with his business practices in New York.
Trump has always been unpopular in the deeply blue California, but the number of Republicans in the state who say they no longer identify with him could have major consequences if the trend is apparent elsewhere. The former president is the presumed front-runner for the GOP's presidential nominee in 2024, but Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is quickly gaining popularity with Republicans throughout the U.S.
The poll also asked respondents if they felt it would be good for the country to have prosecutors bring charges against Trump. More than 90% of California Democrats said it would be good for the country, while only 22% of Republicans agreed. Additionally, 79% of California Democrats said it's likely that the several ongoing criminal investigations into Trump will result in political violence, while 32% of Republicans think political violence is a likely consequence.
