The prospect of four criminal cases – not to mention two separate civil cases – might have silenced anyone else, but Mr Trump has proved over the years that he does not play by the same rules as other Americans.
For good measure, Mr Trump also attacked Jack Smith, the special counsel leading the case, describing him as “deranged” and a “lowlife” while denouncing the Justice Department’s search warrant to access the former president’s now-dormant Twitter account as an “atrocity”. The first of these trials, over Mr Trump’s alleged attempts to steal the 2020 election by making false claims of election fraud and inciting the assault on the Capitol, could come as early as January next year. That would coincide with the first Republican primaries.
