Doug Mastriano and Mehmet Oz seemed afterthoughts.

Donald Trump came to northeastern Pennsylvania in his role as political kingmaker on Saturday night. But he seemed far more intent on advancing his own return to power in a talk that sounded more and more like a campaign speech as it stretched to nearly two hours.

Still, he briefly mentioned Oz and Mastriano at the beginning of his talk, then scarcely mentioned either for more than an hour. Perhaps in response to a reported lack of enthusiasm for Oz among the Trump base, he referred to the former TV doctor and long-time New Jersey resident as “my friend Oz who is a great guy ... He’s with the MAGA movement all the way.”According to the Real Clear Politics average of polls as of Friday, Oz trails Democrat John Fetterman by 7.4 percentage points.

Oz claimed great “overreach” in the public health response to COVID-19, saying medicine was “weaponized” to infringe on personal rights. He shared his time with his wife Rebecca, who addressed “what Republicans believe” about women’s rights. Former President Donald Trump, left, is joined Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano on stage at a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022. Yet for many if not most in the crowd that waited upwards of four hours for Trump, he was the main attraction.Tracey Sheldon of Florida traveled to the rally with about 100 people who attend Trump events all over the country.

Laing said: “I’m not sure, but I think Oz will do right by us. He’s a conservative … You just have to hope like hell he does what he says he’s going to do.” A warmup speaker, Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, triggered resounding applause when she said Trump won the 2020 election. She further said prosecutions in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol are unjust, and promised investigations and holding Democrats “accountable” when Republicans return to power.
