Trump Commutes Sentence Of Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich
President Donald Trump on Tuesday commuted the sentence of Rod Blagojevich, the former Democratic governor of Illinois who was convicted of corruption over his efforts to sell off the vacant Senate seat of Barack Obama when he ascended to the presidency.
Blagojevich has been serving his time at the Englewood Federal Correctional Institution in Colorado since March 15, 2012. “He’s been in jail for seven years over a phone call where nothing happens — over a phone call, which he shouldn’t have said what he said, but it was braggadocio, you would say,” Trump said. “I would think that there have been many politicians — I’m not one of them, by the way — that have said a lot worse over the telephone.” Saul Loeb / AFP / Getty ImagesThe two men also know each other personally.
