Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is calling on elite K-12 private schools to return loans they received under an emergency small business loan program
on Thursday. The school told the newspaper it needed the loan to help address potential declines in enrollment and charitable giving, among other expenses.
Sidwell Friends School in Washington, the alma mater of daughters of former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, is also receiving money through the lending program. The call for elite private K-12 schools to return the federal loan funds is the latest episode of backlash to wealthy schools receiving government assistance under the stimulus law Congress passed and Trump signed in March.
