Frustrated truckers and produce trade officials are pleading with Abbott to pay more attention to the need for a smooth flow of trade traffic between Texas and Mexico, its No. 1 trading partner.
“The tie-ups are incredibly worrisome, and truckers are reporting 36 hours in line,” said Dante Galeazzi, the CEO and president of the Texas International Produce Association in nearby Mission. “How do they go to the bathroom and eat? It’s 100 degrees every day.” Produce such as avocados and tomatoes are ripening even in refrigerated trucks because of the delays, Galeazzi said. The Pharr bridge was “targeted” first, Galeazzi said, and only about 30 percent of the normal trade of produce has passed through in recent days. “That’s $30 million in produce that hasn’t been able to pass through and 9,000 persons in the Texas industry are idling.
