Its forecast cone is currently pointing at parts of the Hawaiian Islands.Sign up for the Morning Brief email newsletterTropical Storm Calvin is headed toward a brush with Hawaii, but in a much weaker state compared to its peak as a major hurricane late last week.Calvin is a modest-strength tropical storm located about 1000 miles east of the Big Island of Hawaii. On that track, it is expected to brush parts of the islands, particularly the Big Island, overnight Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Residents and those planning to vacation in Hawaii should simply be aware of these potential impacts from Calvin from Tuesday night into Wednesday. Heed any flood warnings from the National Weather Service and stay out of the water, if high surf and rip currents are a threat. After first becoming a tropical depression last Tuesday, then a tropical storm Wednesday, Calvin rapidly intensified into the Western Hemisphere's first major hurricane of 2023 by Friday.

Of nine hurricanes that have passed within 60 nautical miles of Hawaii in NOAA's database since 1971, only two of those, Douglas in 2020 and Fico in 1978, were also Eastern Pacific hurricanes before they arrived.
