The November sale represents a fraction of holdings collected by the late Willem Cordia and his wife, Marijke van der Laan, of the Netherlands
One of the world’s largest private art collections, the Triton Collection Foundation in the Netherlands, is selling 30 works with an estimated value of at least US$70 million at a dedicated Phillips sale in November.
The sale of a portion of the Triton Collection represents a generational shift for the foundation, which has “hundreds” of works in all and was founded by Willem Cordia, who died in 2011, and his wife Marijke van der Laan. Their children—a son, Keesjan Cordia, and a daughter who prefers not to be named—however, plan to continue collecting in the careful tradition of their parents.
Engelen says both began working with the family when they were young specialists in the 1990s—Engelen was at Christie’s at the time, and Heiden was at Sotheby’s. The family took “all the time in the world to listen to us, to what we had to say about art, how we experienced it,” Engelen says. “It’s a very dear friendship and it’s been a very long journey.”
The restoration “was only possible if the painting was owned by an institution or by a collector with a very long-term view because it was a very long process,” Engelen says. Aside from the Cubist paintings, other notable works include a large-scale, 1954 untitled abstract expressionist painting by Joan Mitchell that Phillips says marks a transformation in her approach, and Jean Dubuffetr’s Inspecteurs Cinoque et Dingue, 1967.

Nobel Prize in medicine awarded to scientists who laid foundation for messenger RNA vaccinesThe Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded to Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman, scientists who worked together to turn messenger RNA from a fragile genetic material that triggered a problematic immune response into a powerful medicine. Their key breakthrough in 2005 went largely unnoticed, but is now the backbone of two leading coronavirus vaccines and could lead to a whole new class of vaccines and drugs.
