LOS ANGELES — With their best on-ball defender on the bench in street clothes, the Spurs’ historically bad defense was even worse than usual in Thursday night’s 138-100 loss to the Clippers.
To make matters worse, the Spurs learned about two hours before the game they would be without rookie Jeremy Sochan, who was downgraded from doubtful to out after suffering a left quad contusion in the second half of Wednesday’s 113-104 loss to the Lakers. But the Spurs missed Sochan the most. The forward from Baylor has scored 10 or more points in his last five games and drew praise before the game from Clippers coach Ty Lue.
Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with 19 points. Bates-Diop, who started in place of Sochan, had 13. Isaiah Roby , Doug McDermott and Jakob Poeltl also scored in double figures. Powered by the 31-year-old forward, the Clippers have won their last three games by 14 over Dallas, by 18 over the Lakers and by 38 over the Spurs.
